Chapter Twenty

I found everything upstairs had significantly calmed since we’d first arrived. Magda sat in the corner with Elaine, the two women seemingly lost in a deep discussion.

“You should get some sleep if you can,” Byron said, his hand pressed comfortingly against the small of my back as he walked back into the Noree’s living room.

“I just need somewhere quiet. I want to try something, but I don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up in case it doesn’t work.” I kept my voice carefully low.

Byron shot me a curious glance but didn’t question me further, and for that I was grateful. I didn’t want to have to spend my time explaining my abilities. If what I was planning worked, everyone would know soon enough. And if it didn’t? Then it was better they didn’t know the extent of my fading abilities.

“Noree has a spare room,” he said. “It’s not really a spare room so much as it’s her workroom.”

“I can’t use that. If she’s been doing spells in there, it won’t work. I really need to just go back to my apartment; failing that, the basement of my office could work too.”

Byron gave me a hard look. “Your apartment isn’t safe. The fae are crawling all over it.”

“And the office?” I couldn’t keep the hopeful note from my voice despite already knowing the answer.

“It’s the same. When I swung by there earlier, I barely got out unscathed. Lucky for me I heal fast.” He winked at me.

“You didn’t say you were hurt.”

“It wasn’t important. Like I said, I heal… unlike you.” I knew he was referring back to Death’s earlier statement.

“Look, everyone here is safe for now, but it’s not going to last,” I said. “The sooner I can get all of this sorted out, the better for all involved…” I chewed my lip.

“You don’t think you can do what you need to here,” he said with a sigh.

“It’s not just that, Byron. I need the Bone Blade. I’m stronger with it than without. That thing has all kinds of power.” I left out the part about it actually being made from the bones of the first banshee. What he didn’t know couldn’t hurt him. “If anything is going to get me through all of this, it’s that.”

“Fine, but the rest of them aren’t going to like this one bit,” he said grumpily.

“We’re not telling them.”

Byron shook his head and folded his arms over his chest. “Darcey, I’m not particularly good at sharing—it’s not really part of the alpha territory—but I’m no fool. I know the best chance of keeping you safe is to let the others know what’s going on and have a say in the best way to protect you.”

I wanted to be angry at him, but I was far too tired to muster even a fraction of the effort it would take. Part of me knew he was right. Running around the city half-cocked was a bad idea, but the thought of endangering the others left a bitter taste in my mouth.
